Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, former Chief of General Staff under Gen. Ibrahim Babaginda, is dead
Former Chief of General Staff under Gen. Ibrahim Babaginda, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu (retd) is dead.
Aikhomu, 72, according to sources, Aikhomu died of an unknown ailment at his Apapa GRA, Lagos home at about 6.15pm.
Aikhomu served under Babaginda between 1986 and 1993. He was enlisted shortly after graduation to the Nigeria Navy, where he rose to the position of Chief of Naval Staff in 1984. He was a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management.
The late Aikhomu hailed from Idumebo, Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State.
Born October 20, 1939 the late naval officer had his early education at Irrua Government School and later Yaba College of Technology (1954 – 1958), Royal Britannia Naval College, Long Gunnery Specialist Course, India and the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (1982).
Former Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Edo State, Anselm Ojezua, said the late Admiral would be remembered for many developmental projects executed at Irrua such as the Irrua Specialist Hospital and the installation of Digital Telecommunication Exchange in Irrua.
Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday said he received Aikhomu’s death with shock and sadness.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, Jonathan described Aikhomu as a patriot who dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria in the Navy, and contributed immensely to the country’s political development.
“Admiral Aikhomu’s life was defined by the values of hard work and commitment; he was a conscientious and dutiful officer who was in all respects admirably equipped for his roles in the military and in the larger society,”the President said.
